Encouraging accessible expression.
The Podcasters is an accessible and multilingual podcasting collective. We work with various populations across the United States to help young people access the tools and develop the skills to tell their own stories and publicly express their opinions.
Our program has four dimensions of impact: first, we hold a dedicated space for young members of various populations to participate in and lead meaningful discussions; second, we help young people develop the skills and access the resources necessary to learn the art of podcast production; third, we encourage celebration of language by speaking multiple languages in our podcasts; and fourth, by publishing and sharing our episodes, we help the world learn from the unique knowledge and wisdom that young people posses.
How We Achieve Our Mission
- 1) Creating space for meaningful discussion.
- Our teams meet regularly to discuss the issues impacting their daily lives, from the more routine aspects to the larger scale. This is a space to vent, to commiserate, to celebrate, to educate, to inspire, and to be inspired. In some of the populations with which we work, such spaces can be difficult to access.
- 2) Learning the art of podcast production.
- From leading conversations to audio editing, we help Podcaster participants gain and/or develop the increasingly marketable skillset necessary to create their own podcasts.
- 3) Fostering an environment of multicultural and multilingual expression.
- By encouraging young people to use whichever language(s) they choose, and to speak about their experiences growing up in multicultural environments, we aim to combat the concept that certain languages or stories must be reserved for certain spaces or audiences.
- 4) Creating a platform for young voices to reach a larger audience.
- We believe that, when a person chooses to share their story, everyone––from the audience to the storyteller themselves—benefits and grows. In service of that belief, we share content and episodes through social media, streaming platforms, and community radio stations.
